What is AMTU?

The Association of Municipalities with Urban Transport of the Barcelona’s 2nd Metropolitan Ring, now AMTU, is a network of municipalities, voluntarily associated to it, which aims to enhance and promote urban public transport in their cities, and support urban mobility in general within the metropolitan region of Barcelona. AMTU is an association of public interest, listed in the official register of Generalitat de Catalunya, and it is a member of the public transport consortium of this region, Metropolitan Transport Authority – ATM, created by Generalitat de Catalunya, Barcelona City Council, Metropolitan Transport Agency – EMT, and Spanish Government as an observer.

Nowadays, AMTU is made up of 70 municipalities from the 2nd metropolitan ring:

Abrera, Alella, L'Ametlla del Vallès, Argentona, Barberà del Vallès, Bigues i Riells, Blanes, Cabrera de Mar, Calella, Caldes de Montbui, Cardedeu, Castellar del Vallès, Castellbisbal, Cerdanyola del Vallès, Corbera de Llobregat, El Masnou, El Papiol, Esparreguera, Granollers, Igualada, Les Franqueses del Vallès, Lliçà d’Amunt, Lliçà de Vall, Malgrat de Mar, Manresa, Martorell, Matadepera, Mataró, Molins de Rei, Mollet del Vallès, Montornès del Vallès, Palau-solità i Plegamans, Parets del Vallès, Pineda de Mar, La Pobla de Claramunt, Premià de Dalt, Premià de Mar, Ripollet, La Roca del Vallès, Rubí, Sabadell, Sant Andreu de Llavaneres, Sant Antoni de Vilamajor, Sant Celoni, Sant Cugat del Vallès, Sant Fost de Campsentelles, Sant Quirze del Vallès, Sant Sadurní d’Anoia, Sant Vivenç de Montalt, Sant Vicenç dels Horts, Santa Eulàlia de Ronçana, Santa Maria de Palautordera, Santa Perpètua de Mogoda, Sitges, Sentmenat, Teià, Terrassa, Torrelles de Llobregat, Vacarisses, Valldoreix, Vallirana, Vic, Viladecavalls, Vilafranca del Penedès, Vilanova del Vallès, Vilanova i la Geltrú, and Vilassar de Mar. They are also of the AMTU: The County Departments of Garraf, Vallès Occidental, and Alt Penedès.

In 2008 AMTU municipalities represented a population of more than 1.920.458 inhabitants, and their urban transport services provided transportation to almost 44,97 million users; this figure situates AMTU as the 3rd public bus operator in Catalonia, after TMB and EMT. And is still growing.

AMTU is managed by the General Assembly and the Executive Board of 16 leading cities, elected by the Assembly. Current AMTU’s president is Mr. Josep Mayoral, mayor of Granollers, and its General Director is Mr. Antoni Prunés.
